Substitute holidays and Citizens' holidays

Under Article 3 of Japan's Act on National Holidays, when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the nearest following day that is not a national holiday becomes a day off (substitute holiday). A day whose previous and next days are both holidays (and that is not itself a holiday) is also a day off (citizens' holiday). The Cabinet Office data labels both simply as "holiday", so this page works out the type from the provisions of the Act.

What is the difference between a substitute holiday and a citizens' holiday?

Both are days off set by Article 3 of Japan's Act on National Holidays. A substitute holiday is the nearest following non-holiday when a holiday falls on a Sunday (Article 3, Paragraph 2). A citizens' holiday is a weekday whose previous and next days are both holidays (Article 3, Paragraph 3). The Cabinet Office data labels both as "holiday".

When is Silver Week 2026?

Silver Week 2026 is Sat, Sep 19 – Wed, Sep 23, 2026, 5 days off. The weekday between Respect for the Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day becomes a Citizens' Holiday and joins up with the weekend. In 2027, Respect for the Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day do not join up, so there is no 5-day Silver Week.
